Equity and Inclusion Strategist

Each of us has biases, known and "unconscious." I'm sure you are reading this and thinking, "not me." When we think of biases, we form opinions about people based on race, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, social class, education, country of origin, ethnicity, ability status, religion, nationality, etc. We sometimes use these biases to dictate how we treat people. Too often, people discriminate against those they perceive to have less power. Patriarchy and institutional racism are prevalent in every area of society and each of us must work to dismantle this imbalanced power structure.

Diversity. Equity. Inclusion. These are three of the most (over)used words in today's society. Everywhere we look, we learn of a new initiative that touts creating diversity. Or that cultivates equity.  These are just concepts without building inclusion--that is where the action is. There are many people who profess to build community but truly lack the knowledge and skills to push the need for spaces that are welcoming at every level.

In the 21st century, we are living in a world that is both bigger and smaller than ever. Due to the internet, we have the ability to make connections and build community quickly. We have information at the tip of our fingertips and are able to study the past with lightning speed. We are also able to study the injustices that have happened in the United States and all over the world. We can listen to first-person narratives of those who have traditionally been marginalized and excluded from the mainstream.
